6 month milestone Photoshoot

If you’re looking for a photoshoot idea for your baby in the Los Angeles area, allow me to share my favorite!

Today I’m introducing my favorite 6 month milestone photoshoot styling, and it is perfect for girls and boys. And if you’re wondering what you’re baby should wear for the photo session, it’s easy. Not a thing!

I’m talking about sink bath photoshoot, friends! My most important tip about this shoot is at the very bottom, so don’t miss it!

Why use an actual sink (versus a studio prop tub):

One of the best thing about babies is that they can fit into ordinary adult size things and make it adorable! When I think “sink”, I think “chores”. Yuck. But put a baby in it and all of a sudden it’s so sweet, and so playful, and wrapped in generations of nostalgia. The ordinary size of the sink really drives home how small they really are at this stage. In my photographer’s opinion, this is so much cuter than putting them in a baby-size prop tub. The sink won’t change, but they’ll outgrow it and you’ll always be able to point to it and say “I remember when you used to fit right in here.”

Ways to style a personalized sink bath:

The best part of this 6 month photoshoot idea is its styling versatility. Milk baths and bubble baths are my favorite because the offer privacy, and also add beautiful textures to the shots. The props we choose make the shoot more personal to you or can be used to reflect a season; from flowers, to cookies, to fruit, favorite toys, and more! You don’t have to worry about styling. I will take care of making the milk bath, ensuring bubbles are non-toxic and frothy, that flowers don’t sink, and cookies don’t crumble.

When is the best time to a sink bath photoshoot?

There is a sweet spot for this! Your baby should be confidently able to sit on his/her own and maintain the seated positing. Don’t wait too long, though! If you wait too long and they are at the stages where they begin crawling, there is a greater chance that they’ll try to crawl out of the sink. Slippery counters with a crawling baby may be precarious, so I advise against waiting too long!

How long does a shoot like this take?

While the child’s temperament and makes a difference, part of my practice as a photographer is having the ability to adapt and deliver in a short amount of time. The actual time spent with the child in the sink - in this particular shoot - was just 15 minutes. The longer the child tolerates it, the more variety we can get, however I can do a lot in mere minutes!

Who should NOT book a sinkbath?

Not every child loves to be in the water and if your child is one of them, as cute as this shoot is, you should pass on this styling. Children shine when they feel safe, comfortable and are having fun! If we put them in the water knowing they hate it, it likely won’t give us the best results. For such children, I have lots of other great ideas with just as much charm and personality!

Now the good stuff! Ellie’s Sink Bath Photos

For the sink bath shoot I’m sharing today, we chose soft florals and playful bubbles. With a sunny, all-white kitchen, I didn’t want the styling to distract from Baby Ellie!

And if you’re wondering how long this session lasted - I photographed a full gallery in under 15 minutes!

MY MOST IMPORTANT TAKEAWAY: Don’t wait too long to book this type of shoot. The BEST time is when your baby is safely able to sit up, but is not yet standing, or taking those early steps. The reason is that, even though your baby still fits, we want to keep your baby safe above all. If they are avid “climbers” already, a sink bath can be a bit too slippery to be fun. We want your baby sitting and playing, but not crawling around in the sink.

Book early and save your spot for right when your little one can safely sit up!

PS: if you don’t have a suitable sink in your own home, I have alternate kitchens we can shoot in!
